Oil Painting Tricks, Tips & Techniques – March 24 & 25

Instructor: Larry Rudolech
This workshop is designed to bring out what’s positive in each artist – regardless of your experience level. Larry’s goal is not to make you paint like him, but rather, to guide you in pursuing or improving your own visual voice. Through demonstrations, examples, group discussions, hands-on painting and personal critiques, you will learn methods Larry has used to develop and help overcome problems that may face you in the studio. From exploring basic painting and composition principles, and color to developing energetic brushstrokes, structure and form. This relaxed environment will inspire, encourage and give you insight to finding ways to meet challenges in your painting studio. For All levels.

New Creative Collage Techniques – April 21 & 22

Instructor: Nita Leland
Learn lots of collage techniques and see how easy it is to make exciting art work with a wide assortment of odds and ends and, if you like, paint. You’ll have fun making creative magazine and newspaper collages, recycling old paintings, and creating faux-texture background supports for collage papers, including oriental papers, handmade papers and photographs, using techniques described in Nita’s new book, New Creative Collage Techniques. Nita will show you how to set up your workspace and prepare your materials so your collages will last. There will be a brief demo at the start of each class, then everyone will work on suggested activities or on their own projects. You’ll also learn design tips and how to make color work in your collages. To add to the excitement bring some items to share with the class–one artist’s “trash” might be another’s treasure! Each day ends with an upbeat group critique. For all levels of experience.

Experimental Painting: Inspirational Approaches in Mixed Media – June 23 & 24

Instructor: Lisa L. Cyr
This highly visual, hands-on workshop will investigate exploratory methodologies, techniques and approaches in mixed-media art. Throughout the workshop, many exciting in-depth demonstrations will be shown, providing an extensive array of visually stimulating possibilities for artists to explore. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional mixed-media techniques will be covered, including employing alternative working grounds, using custom tools, toning the painting surface in imaginative ways, creating a tactile ground, building the visual architecture and utilizing innovative mixed-media techniques to create intriguing effects. To assist artists on their own creative path, topics on nurturing the creative spirit, developing personal content through journalism, embracing a multidisciplinary mindset and creating message-driven art will also be discussed. For artists that are looking to push their work to a new level, this workshop will be a valuable resource and an ongoing source for creative inspiration. For all levels of experience

Colored Pencil and the Expressive Line – July 7 & 8

Instructor: John Smolko
Scribbles are the first marks we make as children and are accomplished effortlessly. John reintroduces scribbling to the process of creating art and challenges the participants to experiment with mark making. Students who successfully complete this challenging workshop will understand the Qualities of Line including the power of Expressive Line. This experience and knowledge will enable them to further explore the limitless possibilities of linear art on their own. Color choices and color experimentation will be an integral part of this experience
Participants are encouraged to prepare a line drawing of subject matter they are interested in for this workshop. Scribbles work for portraits, figures, landscapes, still-lives, and anything you may think of to create. John will have some reference photos and still-life objects for students who need them on site. For all levels of experience.

The Basics of Dyeing Silk – August 18 & 19

Instructor: Marge Beinkemper
How often do you get to wear your paintings? Silk is the loveliest fabric to wear and is just as delightful to “paint.” However, in this workshop you won’t be painting – you will be dyeing.
Beginning with the basics of silk dyeing, using resists as your drawing tool, you will learn to copy your design ideas onto silk, use resist in a more painterly fashion, try salt and other textural effects, and play with Suminagashi marbling inks on silk. You will go home with the knowledge of how to handle silk dyes, which materials to start with, a glimpse of the possibilities of this medium, and at least 3 silk scarves. Dye is an unforgiving medium, but even less successful results are beautiful to wear. “Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes — art is knowing which ones to keep.” There is a material fee ($23) for instructor-provided supplies. For beginner and intermediate levels.

Creative Figurative Sculpting in Clay – September 8 & 9

Instructor: Eric Phagan
Whether you choose to work in a representational style — or just use your imagination — you will experiment with clay to create a figure (human or otherwise). Eric will take you through the process of constructing a wire armature on a wood base and model a three-dimensional form with self-hardening, air dry clay. You will learn different sculpting techniques, as well as a multitude of textures and forms. Eric takes you step-by-step through the procedure with instructions and demonstrations to create an original, free-form sculpture in this fun filled, informal workshop. There is a material fee ($50) for instructor-provided supplies that must be received by the instructor 30 days in advance – or you may choose to bring your own supplies. . Beginner to intermediate levels.

NOVEMBER 4 & 5 – Creating Drama in Your (Still) Life with Pastels

Instructor: Cindy Haase
Learn the chiaroscuro (light and shadow) approach to painting that will have people saying “that looks like an old master”. The concepts of light and shadow can be applied to any fine art medium, but we will be using pastels in this informative workshop. The light and shadow approach starts at the very beginning with setup and lighting. Cindy will demonstrate how to begin your painting and take you on a wonderful journey from setup, to sketching, to building the structure of your painting and working with color. She will also show you how to finish off your painting by working magic with lost edges. You will also learn the basics of pastels — like when to use hard or soft pastels, how to develop layers of rich color, add texture, and correct mistakes. Cindy will inspire and challenge you to be able to do the work on your own once the workshop is over. For all levels of experience.
